A Lady of Excellence – Tina Dabi
When the results of the UPSC exams were announced on the 10th of may 2016, life changed for the Delhi girl Tina Dabi who had topped the examination, with the total score of 1063, at the very young age of 22. Gracing her achievement was the fact that she had cracked the exam and topped it in her very first attempt.
Tina Dabi was born in Bhopal, as the elder daughter of the two daughters to Mrs.Himani Dabi, an engineering graduate from NIT Bhopal who has also been the topper in her college, and to Mr.Jaswanth Dabi who is an engineer too, working in the Telecom department. They shifted to Delhi when she was in her 7th grade. She did rest of her schooling from Convent of Jesus and Mary. Like all other young teens, Tina had her own set of dreams too which included cracking one of the most difficult exams of all, the UPSC exam for IAS. Her passion for the same was supported by her parents who had also cracked the UPSC exams for Engineering, the IES. Tina has been an acer all her life, beginning with topping her school as well as CBSE, class 12th boards in Political Science by scoring a perfect centum. Following which she did her graduation in B.A. Political Science from Lady Shri Ram College and was the topper from her batch. Along with academic brilliance Tina was blessed with oratory aptitude and excellent debating skills. She took the delegation of the vice speaker in the youth parliament for 2012 where her performance was recognised as exemplary. She was ranked the first among 1078 other candidates who were finally selected. She and her family did expect that she would get through the exams but were surprised to know that she topped the same. She gives credit for her success to four things- Patience, Focus, Discipline and Parental support. But don’t judge her with all her academic achievements, for her to be a nerd, she is just as cool as anybody of her age. She reads Roald Dahls and gets amused by Austen works, watches the TV show The Big Bang Theory regularly. She loves shopping and savours every drop of ‘pani’ of panipuris.
She unlike other achievers suggests short sloted studying process. She told in an interview that she studied for 8 hours a day and gave herself a minimum of 8 hours sleep too, also she had timings set for some relaxation and recreation too. She recommends an updated method of studying rather than bulking the quantity of study materials for later hours of mugging up.
“The world over, it is gender which is the glass ceiling, and therefore I decided I would work in Haryana “says Tina when asked her inspiration for aspiring to be a civil servant. She has opted for Haryana cadre as she wanted to do something challenging in life and she found Haryana to be the suitable place for such a term of service. She wanted to be a model for all the aspiring people who want to crack UPSC at the first attempt of the following generation.
