Sanjukta Parashar , who is one of the most formidable cops feared among Bodo Militants
Sanjukta Parashar is a unique woman on all counts. She inspires fear among Bodo militants and for good reason. The mother of a six-year-old boy ranked 85th AIR(All India Rank) in the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) exam also known as the civil services examination. Breaking all stereotypes she chooses the join the police force rather than a comfortable job as an IAS Officer. In 2006, she joined service as an IPS officer. She assumed the post of Assistant Commandant of Makum in 2008. By doing so the Assamese braveheart chose the path less travelled, becoming an example for people all around the country.
She is the daughter of Dulal Chandra Barua and Meena Devi. She completed her class 10th exam from Holy Child School in Guwahati. She was inclined towards sports and joined swimming classes. She keenly participated in sports activities at school. She would also participate in plays and march pasts. She pursued undergraduate studies from Indraprastha College, University of Delhi where she studied Political Science. She did her Masters in International Relations from the illustrious Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in New Delhi. Her topic for her MPhil was US-ASEAN relations. She did her Ph.D. in US Foreign Policy in Indonesia.
Currently, she is the SP(Superintendent of Police) of Jorhat district of Assam. She is active on social media websites like facebook. She is married to Puru Gupta, IAS officer since 2008. As of 2015, he was posted in Assam-Meghalaya cadre. She can only manage to meet him once in two months according to DailyMail.
Her decision to join the police force is considered unique and rare by many, who question her career choice. In an earlier interview, she said, “Gender is in the mind. There is never any constraint anywhere. So long as the mind and body are in sync and you know where your heart is, the concept of gender does not exist. We are all officers who are required to do a job. If the job is tough, then just train yourself to get tougher.”
Not only is she a tough cop but she is also a wife and a mother. According to news sources, she has successfully captured 16 militants and arrested over 64. Over a period of 15 months, she confiscated a lot of lethal arms and ammunition. She is one of the most formidable cops feared among Bodo Militants.
She has held many positions in her tenure. According to marathitv.com-
SP Jorhat : Jan 2011 – January 2014
SP Sonitpur :Jan 2014 – August 2016
PHQ, Guwahati : From September 2016
Although she is a nightmare for militants, Sanjukta also has a softer side. Being the humble person that she is, she says criminals should fear her. She spends time in relief camps. She distributes candies to helmet wearing users of two-wheelers.
Despite the threats she receives from the National Democratic Front of Bodoland or NDFB, she continues to serve the country and do her duty. This is a true act of bravery on her part. Choosing this path of life although it poses so many difficulties is an inspiring life decision.
