P V Sindhu clinch the title of India Open Super Series
New Delhi: Star shuttler PV Sindhu defeated Olympic champion Carolina Marin of Spain in straight games in her maiden India Open Super Series title on Sunday. Sindhu defeated Marin 21-19, 21-16 to clinch the gold medal.
However, Marin showed her brilliance against the Indian shuttler but the home advantage, perhaps, worked into Sindhu’s favor for she kept dominating the match from the very first minute. Earlier on Saturday (April 1) Sindhu, stormed into the final after beating South Korea’s Sung Ji Hyun 21-18, 14-21, 21-14 in the semifinal clash.
The world number 5 player took the first game 21-19 and set the pace of the match. The Indian shuttler never looked back ever since as she claimed the second game 21-16.
The women’s singles final in the 2017 India Open Super Series will witness two of the greatest women players on the BWF tour, and today’s match-up only re-enforces the fact that the world needs not be worried when there are no Chinese finalists in a big tournament.
Sindhu had achieved what, Saina Nehwal, has done two years earlier — notched up an India Open triumph. She won the prize money of worth $24,375, in the presence of her father P.V. Ramana, a former national volleyball captain. Her coach P. Gopichand was also present at Siri Fort Stadium, New Delhi during this match.
