Pakeezah actress Geeta Kapoor abandoned by her own son
In yet another case of abandonment of senior citizens, Geeta Kapoor, best known for her role in Pakeezah was abandoned by her own son. She was admitted in the hospital a month ago and her bill has gone beyond 1.5 lakhs. CBFC member Ashoke Pandit and filmmaker Ramesh Taurani have paid the hospital bills of the veteran actor.
According to reports Geeta Kapoor said, “He used to beat me up as I did not approve of his philandering ways. He would give me food once in four days, and sometimes, even lock me up for several days. I was not ready to go to an old-age home, that’s why, he planned all this. He deliberately kept me hungry and I fell ill. Then, he got me admitted and fled.” It is an extremely shocking statistic to know that one out of three senior citizens are victims of abuse.
According to other published records, doctors have said that her son, raja, falsely claimed to be an army officer and got her to the hospital, when asked to pay the deposit he left saying he would get the money from the nearest ATM but never did he return.
We are a country highly known for our family values and culture and our parents have perhaps raised us better to let modern day dreams and greed take over them.
What most people, especially victims don’t know is that there is a special Act, Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007.
It is estimated that by 2026, the population of Indian senior citizens may rise upto 12.4% and to overcome problems faced by senior citizens and safeguard their interests, this act was introduced in 2007.
The Act was enacted ” To provide for more effective provisions for the maintenance and welfare of parents and senior citizens, guaranteed and recognized under the Constitution and for matters connected therewith or incidental thereto.”
The concept of joint family is slowly being abandoned and nuclear family system is extremely rigid to even consider your parents as an immediate family member.
A lesson to be learnt is not only to protect our parents and help the abandoned once but to also every individual must be aware that when the sun sets, they should be able to back themselves up.
