Yet another proud moment when Governor of Manipur and former Union Minister for Minority Affairs, Dr Najma A Heptulla , became the chancellor of Jamia Millia. Jamia Millia is a central university, in Delhi which was established during the British rule in 1920.
Najma Heptulla is the grand-niece of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, a great Indian freedom fighter but she never let herself be defined as that and went on to establish her own name.
She was born in Bhopal and her education includes a Masters Degree in Zoology and a Ph.D. in Cardiac Anatomy from the University of Denver. In 1966, she married Akbarali A Heptulla and they had three beautiful daughters.
Apart from being the minister of Minority Affairs Of India, Heptulla actively takes part in issues related to women. She is the author of the book titled “AIDS-Approaches to Prevention”
She is a prolific writer and has also written many research papers and articles in Indian as well as foreign journals. Her main field of writing is mainly on development and empowerment of women.
In one of her seminars she emphasised on the need for empowerment of women worldwide. She believes that the situation of women in India is still better than that in other countries. She also asserted that the United States has never had a woman president whereas in India, women have been given positions of President and Prime Minister as well.
She is a leading light not only through her contributions to our nation but also through her will to motivate and empower women worldwide.
