As per the new rule, women in Maharashtra can now use their father’s name while children can use their mother’s name in all official documents. This was issued by the Women and Child Welfare Department. It was in alignment with third women’s policy, 2014, cleared by the state cabinet in March.
Incase a woman faces difficulties in following this new resolution she can complain to the concerned district collector.
In case of children, they can now mention names of both the parents, or either of them, in the documents, the Resolution said.
“Children can use either their mother’s or father’s name,” a Government Resolution issued by the Women and Child Welfare Department today said.
This is a step towards women empowerment and equality. It would now be a personal choice for women as they can choose either husband’s name or father’s name.
While this new resolution is now only implemented in Maharashtra, the other states must too implement the same. This is just one step towards gender equality and there are lots many to be taken.
Earlier in April this year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had announced that women don’t need their husband’s name on passport. “Women don’t have to submit marriage/divorce certificate for passport. It will be their discretion to use father/mother’s name in the passport” spoke the Prime Minister.
