Anna Chandy, the country’s first supervising and training transactional analyst, who today dons the hat of the chairperson of the Live Love Laugh Foundation.
She inspired many women expressing how to overcome sexual harassment and depression in an event “Battle Of Minds” organized by FICCI FLO Jaipur Chapter in the leadership of Chairperson Ms. Minal Jain
Anna spoke about the depression, people go through and being unable to express it. Being sad and being depressed are two different things. Also, people going through depression don’t look so, while someone sad will look sad. People talk about physical fitness, but mental health is equally important. I see people suffering, and their families feel a sense of shame about it, which doesn’t help. One needs support and understanding.
Abnormal is the new normal — at least for mental health.Thirty-six per cent of Indians suffer from depression, according to a 2011 World Health Organization study. Not many, however, seek professional help because of the stigma attached to it.
She says professional help is necessary because firstly, it takes a lot out of a person to express himself and then when you get all the guts to express it your Indian family members, they do not buy it that well. I quoted ‘Indian’ because it is considered that mental health is not much of a problem.
Anna quoted that,
“ We’re all a pressure cooker, who don’t do anything to release the stress and that pressure out of ourselves”
There is often a stigma attached to mental illness. But if more people realize that most will eventually develop some mental disorder, at least briefly, that stigma might fall. Many people that seemed to have enduring mental health. They may have developed brief mental disorders that got overlooked.
She emphasized about her story and getting over mental health. She was sexually abused at the age of 6 and 16. In India, more than 48% of the women are sexually abused and this is the major cause of mental health issues. Unable to express what they have gone through, is kept like a pressure cooker in their minds. Until it explodes as depression.
Anna tells us how Deepika expresses her vulnerability to the world. Deepika told Anna “If by my story one person can be helped, I’ve done my job”.
Deepika said that it was difficult people to believe that she is going through depression. Most people could not see beyond her unparalleled career, her beautiful house, cars, lifestyle. But she presses on the fact that life is not limited to these factors.
The event was then concluded by saying ” Tap your potential, acknowledge your treatments and take help if you need there is nothing wrong”
She also addressed the very common issue in today’s parenting, She adds, Engulfment is as bad as abandonment.
“It’s now called as Helicopter parenting where you are overprotective about your children. If you are a helicopter parent, then the chances are, your child, in his/her adult life, will be scared to experiment or take risks. They will be unable to think for themselves and take decisions because all their lives, someone else has been taking their decisions.”
“There are all sorts of titles flying around. Like life coach. It sounds very stylish but who is a life coach?”- Anna Chandy
