Blue Whale Game “A game of Death”

All of us (who read newspapers, or are aware of the current issues in the country) know about the mysterious, ominous Blue Whale Game and the recent deaths related to it. The Blue Whale case has been an unsolved mystery that has had consequences all around the globe. United States, United Kingdom, Russia, India, and many other countries have had deaths related to this murderous game. Now, let’s answer the Five Ws of this mystery, and get to know about it.


Even though there is no confirmation about the existence of the Blue Whale Game or Blue Whale Challenge, it is speculated to be a suicide game in which the curator or a group of administrators give the participant a daily task to be performed for 50 days and, post pictures on the completion of the task. At the end of the game, the participant is told to commit suicide. The authorities have not given a confirmation about the existence of the game, but the kin of the recently deceased have affirmed that they have seen their loved ones performing the tasks similar to the ones given in the Blue Whale Challenge/Game.


Russia was where the Blue Whale Game is said to have originated and the cases have piled up since, with 150+ people suspected to have committed suicide because of the game. Allegedly, the Blue Whale Game started in Russia in 2013 and caused its first suicide in 2015. The Game gained hype when in 2016, Filipp Budeikin was arrested in Moscow on the suspicion of being one of the curators of the game and, was being questioned by the Russian Police. He was suspected of the complicity of 15 suicides, but as stated by his lawyer — nothing has stuck. The myths, scant information about the Game and the deaths surrounding it has created intriguing narratives and blitz across the globe via mass media.


As mentioned above, the Blue Whale Game started in 2013, and the first suicide that was recorded because of it was in 2015. It was in 2016 when Filipp Budeikin, the speculated curator of the game, was taken in for being questioned and from there on the Blue Whale became a global mystery.  Majorly, the suicides, injuries, etc. that have been reportedly engaged in due to Blue Whale Game has been in the year 2017. Blue Whale Game has spread in the following countries — Argentina, Brazil, Bulgaria, Chile, China, Colombia, Georgia, India, Italy, Kenya, Paraguay, Portugal, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Serbia, Spain, United States, Uruguay, and Venezuela.


The Blue Whale Game/Challenge is an internet game, claimed to be existing several countries. It began in Russia in 2013 with F57. F57 is one of the several names given to the so-called “death group” of the VKontakte social network. Filipp Budeikin, arrested in 2016, was alleged to being the curator of the game and was pled guilty. When asked about the reason behind the creation of such a dark game, he told the authorities that he wanted to “cleanse” the society of the people he deemed to be worthless. In 2017, a 17-year-old Russian girl from Khabarovsk Krai region was arrested for the same reason. According to the Metro, the girl was behind the creation of the 50 challenges that the participants in the game had to complete. The challenges involved self-mutilation, carving shapes on one’s skin, watching movies at odd hours, listening to certain genres of movies, etc. The girl is known as the “death administrator”.


There are many aspects of the game that have grabbed people’s eyeballs all over the globe. We need to know that it was a Russian journalist who linked a series of unrelated suicides to Blue Whale in an article, creating a wave of moral panic in the nation. The attention given to the game is because of the 150+ suicide cases in Russia which are often linked to Blue Whale. Additionally, there has been an increased speculation of the role of Blue Whale in the suicides of teenagers all over the globe. Some teenagers have explicitly admitted to harming themselves because of the Blue Whale Game. The conundrum surrounding the game, its murkiness, the menace following it and the chaos it has weaved are the major reasons behind the attention it has been given. Adding to this, there is still a speculation about the very existence of the game, which again gives space for the creation of various narratives and myths by the people, media, and authority. It lets your imagination run wild.

Some Unfortunate cases of Blue Whale Game

A 16-year-old boy from Kerala in Southern India was reported to have committed suicide on 26 July 2017, after playing the online Blue Whale game. On 30 July 2017, a 14-year-old boy committed suicide by jumping from the fifth floor of an Andheri (East) building in the city of Mumbai. On 10 August 2017, a Class VII student in the city of Indore, State of Madhya Pradesh, was pulled away by a group of students, before he could take the final suicide leap, off the third floor of the Chamali Devi Public School. On 10 August 2017, a 14-year-old boy on the way to finish the Blue Whale challenge was rescued by the Maharashtra Police, who intercepted the bus in which he was traveling to Pune, from his home town of Solapur. On 3 September 2017, Satvik Pandey, a class XI student from Damoh, Madhya Pradesh committed suicide by jumping in front of a running train after allegedly playing the Blue Whale game. With the growing number of students taking the final leap after playing this game, we Indians need to give Blue Whale Game attention so that the authorities can protect the youth from this murderous game, taking lives of young children all over the world.
